Meiyo single grain whisky aged 17 years in bourbon casks, distilled in 2001, bottled in 2018, 94.5 rating. For a moment you think the oak has gone in too hard and over-dominated. Slowly, though, a deft sweetness - not least orange blossom honey - emerges as the oak fog clears. And it proudly stays on the citrus theme a tangerine note warbles gently, the slight buttery softness of the oak and growing spices its accompaniment, warmer now thanks to that tannin, and chocolate makes the perfect match to the earlier orangey notes.
